If you’re celebrating Easter this weekend, you’re probably in a gift-wrapping, decorating, or crafting frenzy (maybe all of the above!).

This simple bunny envelope is such an easy way to add a lil hop to your goodies! And if you want to think outside the rabbit, scroll to the right for some cute alternate critters! #eastercrafts #easterbasket #diyenvelope #diygreetingcards #diystationery #easterbunny #papercrafts
I’m not really big on zodiac signs, but I happen I’m not really big on zodiac signs, but I happen to have a lot of friends that are my astrological Aquarian sisters. To celebrate our birthdays, we assembled a stellar group of women (with a few Aquarius-adjacent friends in tow), and as an experiment of sorts (and very much inspired by my #PKdailymade art practice), I brought along a little restaurant-friendly, art-making activity.

Everyone got a clipboard with a blank piece of paper, with a number in the corner—one through nine. I brought nine colored pencils (that corresponded to the color palette of one of my favorite paintings), and each person selected a color. My instruction was to quickly make a mark on the paper without too much thought. Then, pass the clipboards to the right, to respond in pencil to the mark(s) made before ours. And we kept passing the clipboards around until everyone at the table had added their gesture to each piece of paper.

We all took our clipboards home and it was my hope that it would live as a pARTy favor (see what I did there?) that represented that moment with those women on that winter night in NYC. The activity took all of 3 minutes but it left everyone with not just a momento, but a feeling of creating something together…sans judgement.
DAILY MADE #30 OBJECTIVE As the last post of my f DAILY MADE #30 OBJECTIVE

As the last post of my first month of daily making (posted late due to last week’s birthday celebrations!), I think this one is so fitting.

What’s the OBJECTIVE here? What’s the point/purpose/goal? In the short-term, these were just meant to be like stretches before a workout…something to limber me up to work on the bigger stuff. And while they did that, they also gave me a cadence to my day. On days when I was feeling like the silver ball in a pinball machine, this assignment gave me a very concrete touchstone to hitch my wagon to. And ideas came, which have bred more ideas and I have been delighted and surprised with some connections I’ve made.

I’ve loved having conversations with people online and in person about the project, and I hope it might inspire others to jumpstart a daily practice.

Moving forward, I’ll be sharing these on my stories (and occasionally on the feed if they are worthy). I’ll create a highlight reel so if you ever feel like catching up, they’ll be there for you!
DAILY MADE #29 DISH I was going to start with a b DAILY MADE #29 DISH

I was going to start with a blanket statement that everyone remembers their childhood dish ware, but then it occurred to me how absurd, and possibly triggering, that statement is. People move around without valuables, some eat on fast food wrappers, while others are lucky to eat. Period.

I think it’s more accurate to say that there are textures, patterns, colors from our childhood that are engraved in our minds eye. And for me, one is this flower pattern from our plates and bowls. Florals weren’t particularly my mother’s taste, and this one had such a youthful vibe that I adored. (I used to struggle to find the repeat and was always annoyed that two adjacent flowers had green leaves.) My parents bought this set on their honeymoon in St. Thomas, and my mom said they fell in love with it because it was a modern take on floral. Sadly they sold it many years ago, but I’ve come to learn that my husband’s grandmother had the coffee cups and pitcher; we are now the rightful owners of those pieces.

I love the idea of plucking a pattern from our mind’s eye and repurposing it as something else in our homes. Not to sell or knock-off, but just to enjoy as a connection to the past.

(Upon additional research I learned that this pattern was designed by @EmilioPucci for @rosenthal_porcelain, famous for his vibrant patterns and the invention of the one-piece ski suit. Swipe ➡️)

DAILY MADE #28 DISTANCE Perhaps a little expected DAILY MADE #28 DISTANCE

Perhaps a little expected to illustrate with maps, but it’s always a good reminder to use a mix of materials in collages. I did “symbolically” choose my city of origin (the Metro Atlanta area) as the ground (and haphazardly the ocean at Martha’s Vineyard for the horizon)!

DAILY MADE #27 DEFECTIVE I stewed over this one a DAILY MADE #27 DEFECTIVE

I stewed over this one a bit because of my eternal struggle with perfectionism. Viewing flaws as just another way to say something is unique can be hard for many.

I was trying to think of a defect that rendered an object totally unusable. This was a moment of gratitude for my crowded craft table because there was a balloon from another project sitting right there. Can you mend a broken balloon? 🎈

This was inspired by the old dance step diagrams that would teach you the box step, or the waltz, or the pachanga! How did anyone follow those?

I’d take Johnny Castle over those any day. 💃🏽 #nooneputsbabyinthecorner

DAILY MADE #25 REFUSE The first word on my brains DAILY MADE #25 REFUSE

The first word on my brainstorm list was “resist” and I pretty much knew where I was going from there. If you’ve never done resist painting with your littles, you’re missing out on some pretty awesome art-making magic! I used an oil pastel but you can use a white crayon or even the end of a candle! Watercolor paint just wicks away when you slide the brush over the wax markings. I almost made a little protest sign to further the whole resistance idea, but instead a pot of 🌺 🌸 🌺! 🤷🏻‍♀️

DAILY MADE #23 GREASE When I couldn't think of a DAILY MADE #23 GREASE

When I couldn't think of a Pink Ladies and T-birds design, I started making glossy black smudge paintings on paper. There was no there there, so I cut one into thin strips and wove it together. Looking at it up close reminds me of the cane chairs I had as a child (and actually have four of in my basement as we speak).

Note to self...weave more often!

DAILY MADE #22 AWARE This word got me thinking of DAILY MADE #22 AWARE

This word got me thinking of the five senses. In college I had an idea for a piece called senseless—trying to examine the power of our senses and what it would mean to lose one. I abandoned that project, but maybe if I had presented this piece….👀👀👀

DAILY MADE #21 SESSION A session is a chunk of ti DAILY MADE #21 SESSION

A session is a chunk of time that accompanies some kind of practice: a training session, a therapy session, a jam session—all practices pointing in one direction, to better whatever it is. But as we all know, practice does not yield linear, steady progress. There is backsliding, blocks, maybe even injuries, but the singular goal is the same.

For this drawing, I divided the paper into squares, like a calendar. And starting from the top left, marked each SESSION with a bar of progress. Sometimes the subsequent SESSIONS show “improvement”, while others plateau or even dip. But you keep coming back...again and again. As you may notice, the last box is just a smidge shy of completely full—in other words, you can reach a goal without achieving perfection.

I had to sharpen my pencil quite a bit to make this drawing. I collected the hot pink shavings into a little baggie and taped it onto the back of the drawing. (Swipe ➡️) I guess you could say the shavings are the sweat and tears; they felt important to save.

DAILY MADE #20 MARATHON Full disclosure I made th DAILY MADE #20 MARATHON

Full disclosure I made this on Sunday night, truly after a MARATHON of a weekend! I know on another day, I might have reacted to this more along the lines of “life is a MARATHON not a sprint,” but I think last night I was simply just feeling a victory for all that my family accomplished in 48 hours. Thus, the red ribbon finish line...that we broke through together, holding hands! (And really it was nothing dramatic, but a solid, smooth weekend that was this chockfull is hard to come by!)

DAILY MADE #19 OFFSET It didn’t even occur to m DAILY MADE #19 OFFSET

It didn’t even occur to me that OFFSET is a noun, verb, and adjective! And actually I think I misdefined it when I thought of OFFSET printing, but that’s okay! I went down the road of off-kilter, and ran with it! But oddly enough, the word actually means counterbalance, so pretty much the opposite. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tape some markers together and try it out!

DAILY MADE #17 OH! OH? OH... Punctuation is every DAILY MADE #17 OH! OH? OH...

Punctuation is everything when it comes to OH. I started writing the word in all my different handwritings (which caps out at about 5), but after drawing an O and an H so many times, I ran with the graphic nature of these letters/shapes.

So I returned to a project from my first book where I used letter stamps to make patterns. So many possibilities...I could have stamped for hours.

Try this with your kids! Try looking at letters in a graphic way. Challenge them to draw a house using an A, H, and an upside U. Or a food using their initials. Endless possibilities! #artchallenge

DAILY MADE #16 SECTION Earlier in the day, I boug DAILY MADE #16 SECTION

Earlier in the day, I bought concert tickets (@theavettbrothers if you must know) so I had been staring at a map of seating sections. SECTION is such a loaded word, and actually the first thing I thought of was a phrenology chart (you know, where they divide the brain into sections to show what part dictates what). And really, the amphitheatre sections looked much like those illustrations.

Once I was painted my version of the section map , I clipped it on the wall and felt a little meh about it. I walked away, thought about it, and then the next day I cut it up into its, yes, SECTIONS. I re-ordered the pieces to match the original painting and slid it to the side of my crowded work table. The next morning, when I came back to it, I had somehow managed to jumble the pieces and before moving it, I took a pic. Once I compared the ordered arrangement to this one, I realized that I preferred this one. Jumbled, overlapping, askew.

If I were to draw a phrenology chart of my brain, I imagine it would be similar: jumbled, overlapping, askew.

Scroll ➡️ to see the different versions.

DAILY MADE #14 FRUIT Bear with me on this one😉. DAILY MADE #14 FRUIT
Bear with me on this one😉...I was
excited to use cheery colors to make an abstract fruit design but it looked like a drawer liner from 1974. So I repainted it using a more cohesive palette (scroll ➡️). Despite its slightly suggestive composition (I blame the banana), once it becomes a repeat pattern, it’s almost acceptable! Scroll again ➡️!

I dropped a photo of it into @spoonflower to see what it would look like on the wall, couch or table.
Just sayin-everyone has it in them to make something they can love!

DAILY MADE $14 ARCHITECTURE I knew I’d be going DAILY MADE $14 ARCHITECTURE
I knew I’d be going in a graphic direction with this one, but as I auditioned materials in my head, nothing seemed to excite me. I had a stack of paint sample strips on my table for another project, and I like how each strip was the same hue with different tones...kind of like how light would shift the tone of a building. So this was “built” out of 4 different paint strips (of 3 colors each), cut and attached with a simple glue stick. If you fancy any of these colors for your walls, just zoom in (they are all @sherwinwilliams )! 😉

DAILY MADE #13 COAT Coat is a noun and a verb, and DAILY MADE #13 COAT
Coat is a noun and a verb, and I tried to represent both in this square today. Admittedly the result elicits a HUH? response, but bare with me. To coat something is to protect it, envelop it, cover it—to make a barrier. Presumably, a coat is a soft, warm covering that shields your body from discomfort (cold). Here, I wrote everything in my life that I want to protect, from my kids to more esoteric things like my voice, and placed a square of fabric on top. On the left side, I used a glossy mod podge to seal it down and on the right, I used a needle and thread to keep it in place. The sealer didn’t give me the “coating” that I wanted, so I attached a piece of a plastic bag on that side.

So I guess we can say that protection can be both hard and soft. Deep stuff, amiright?
