C IS FOR CARDBOARD (AND COLLECTIONS) This project C IS FOR CARDBOARD (AND COLLECTIONS)
This project attempts to solve the over-abundance of two plentiful things in our household: cardboard and stuff my kids collect. There is SO much of both, and sometimes I feel like I’m swimming in it.

These little cardboard swings are a cute, and adaptable way to display objects that your kids can’t live without. For extra stability, add glue dots on the back edge so the swings stay flush with the wall. #PKprompts #cardboardcraftsforkids #cardboardcrafts #diykids
✨B IS FOR BOOKS✨
I’m a fan of making books…publishing them with fabulous editors, writing them, coming up with big ideas…and simply crafting ‘em. For week number two of #pkprompts, I turned cereal and cookie boxes into mini books, with pages made from @3m #postitnotes. The steps are so simple and require no nitpicky measuring.

It’s only week 2, so I’m still sudsing out the benefits of this weekly exercise. So far, I have fun on the list…
✨A is for ABSTRACT✨ #PKprompts I’m glad I s ✨A is for ABSTRACT✨ #PKprompts

I’m glad I started with this one because you only need paint, paper, and a printed photograph. Read these whys and hows before you get started…

1. Print the photo in black and white so you are not distracted by color.
2. Rotate the photo so you stop seeing the picture for what it really is. It’s hard, I know.
3. Don’t use more than 5 paint colors. Assign the colors to the tones in your photo, ranging from white to the darkest tone and mimic that in your painting.
4. Don’t overthink the color palette. Find a frock in your kids’ closet that you like and go with those. Or maybe steal your palette from the book cover next to your bed.
5. Finish it in one sitting.
6. Tape it into a frame after to make it so it feels like real art (because it is)! That’s what I did.
7. Repeat. Flip the photo a different way and do it again. And again. And again. (or not)

If you make one and are willing to share, please tag #PKprompts so I can see it!
There is not a single person (notice I didn’t sa There is not a single person (notice I didn’t say creative person because we are ALL creative) that doesn’t suffer from a bump in the road, a block, a total desire to crawl under the covers.

Instead of seeking out inspiration from the myriad of sources available to me, I decided to start from scratch and offer up a challenge to myself...and to you, if you so choose to join in.

Starting with the letter A, I’m going to post a new craft each week-ish. My plan is that I’m going to choose my word in advance but the making will all happen for the first time here. Yes, the footage will be edited to fit this little 90 second video, but largely the craft will be made and problem-solved in real (and reel) time.

Feel free to follow along and share your pics using the hashtag #PKprompts. I want these to be as low-pressure as possible, so you likely have most of the supplies in your own craft stash.

Let’s go!

I love a good countdown but it can def be a lot of work to prepare. This one that I made for @countrylivingmag a few years back is super easy, but it takes some prep—getting the pegboard, painting it, making the little ornament notes, etc.
🎄
My advice? Just package up 25 pieces of their leftover Halloween candy, number them, and string on a piece of ribbon. Even if it’s just a crumbly pack is Smarties, it’s still fun to open a treat everyday! #adventcalendar #diyadventcalendar #christmascrafts

Don’t you feel like Thanksgiving came early this Don’t you feel like Thanksgiving came early this year with these midterm results? And now that I can breathe and start thinking about celebrating anything, I can also start sharing some fun, crafting ideas on how to set your table to celebrate home, warmth, family, and friends. I made these for the bright and lovely @revealmag, and sadly this was their last print issue. I so enjoyed crafting for the @ScottBrothers and @imlindork.

This craft is 100% from your local @loweshomeimprovement or @Homedepot...and if your taste changes next year, just repaint them!
One of the central raison d’etres of #ProjectKid One of the central raison d’etres of #ProjectKid is to show kids that they have what it takes to be the designers of their world...by making decisions, starting from their point of view, using what they have and adding a little special sauce. Usually we communicate this with a craft showing how you can upcycle a yogurt tub into a cute desk accessory, but sometimes we hit pause on the home design crafts and get to speak to true action that kids can take to help make a difference.

A few weeks ago I volunteered to host a craft table at #TheBigSend, a letter writing event with @votefwd @plannedparenthood , and @northsix The mission of the event was to put 10,000 letters in the mail to voters, urging them to get to the polls in whatever way they could. I had the pleasure of crafting with kids so their parents could get busy writing letters, but I was also so impressed to see kids write letters themselves. (I made all-blue 3D glasses, based on the idea of “seeing the world through rose-colored glasses”...but in this case, just making the world more bluetiful.) Big shout-out to @lovepipsticks for sending us the best dang stickers and tape with which to decorate!

As I try to dispel the “do as I say not as I do” mantra in my own life, I want to urge parents to teach the DO AS I DO tactic. Show your kids how much voting matters, how we have to help lift up those around us that lack resources, and how we have to advocate for fairness, equity, and democracy.

So whether your kids are wearing bluetiful glasses on #electionday or sporting your I VOTED sticker, let them see you voice your choice. Loud and proud, my friends!

Oh, and buy them one of these cute shirts that we made! Proceeds go to @aclu_nationwide

With the #midtermelections less than a week away, it's pretty much all I can think about. Along with many of you, my husband and I proactively keep our kids informed about current social issues (that seem to be moving in a backwards direction). Based on the scouting tradition of earning badges for learning a new skill or deeper understanding, I designed this t-shirt to encourage families to talk openly together about these issues and our fundamental rights.

Please talk to your kids, watch videos, and share real stories about what is at stake. And buy a T-shirt (all proceeds support the @aclu_nationwide) so your kids can show off their earned badges!
