Pipe cleaner crafts are like a beginner course in Pipe cleaner crafts are like a beginner course in Wire Sculpture 101. They are lightweight and easy to shape into whatever you dream up. This craft is a super-fun way for beginning sculptors to explore facial features, making round eyes, short noses, long ears — all with the bend of a pipe cleaner! And because this craft does not require glue, there are no mess-ups. Just give it a facelift and start again! Another goodie in my @campstores series—head over to my profile link for the steps!

Feeling inspired by Sommer’s snowboarding color Feeling inspired by Sommer’s snowboarding color story...
There is a great story behind this craft. Over 3 y There is a great story behind this craft. Over 3 years ago (I think it was closer to 4), I had my studio in my apartment in Brooklyn. That meant that when my kids came home from preschool with their babysitter, they would b-line it for my room for mom hugs (which obviously I loved).
🍪
I was making a craft that required a small piece of cork, so I grabbed a cork coaster and cut a chunk out of it. I left the remainder sitting on the table, and when Sommer, then 4-years-old, came in, she picked it up and said "this looks like a cookie." So I handed her some brown paint and a paint brush, and she added chocolate chips.
🍪
I have been holding onto this coaster for years, always meaning to make a post out of it because it's everything that Project Kid is about...seeing a shape, a random object, and reimagining it as something else.
🍪
I brought the chocolate-chip cookie coaster home from my studio today, along with 3 blank ones, and asked Sommer to finish the set. She didn't remember doing the first one--for her, that was half her life ago, but to me it was just yesterday. And it was a day that I realized I was raising my very own #projectkid.

💙. Every January as a kid in the 80s, I’d wat 💙. Every January as a kid in the 80s, I’d watch a movie called The Boy King on MLK Jr’s birthday. I have no idea if it aired anywhere outside of his and my hometown of Atlanta, but I religiously tuned in. Despite the Southern, conservative world that surrounded me, I always felt the awe of MLK and recognized, in my tiny bubble, what a monumental, world-changing man he was.

This clip always left me with such hope, despite the reality that we were all living in. I knew things were amiss then, and I've recognized that there's a lot to investigate about my southern upbringing, how I was taught, and the predjudice and inequity that was normalized.

I watched this scene with my son today—he was dumbfounded by the bus scene and saw the standing ovation as I did as a kid...that MLK had "won." But we know that he didn't "win." He started something that is far from being finished. Hopefully all of these instagram quotation posts are more than just posturing for likes...I hope that everyone is making a plan for more education, more reparation, more listening...and more change

I started this post earlier today but the turning I started this post earlier today but the turning of the tides had me press pause.
