Birthdays in our house start with filling our kids Birthdays in our house start with filling our kids rooms with balloons and streamers while they sleep. We go a little bananas with this tradition, and our lungs hurt the next day from balloon inflating. This year, I have a new plan to try out— a #homemade #DIY birthday name banner that I designed with @KiwiCo’s new line of craft supplies. You can sneak into your kids’ craft stash after lights out and make it while watching Netflix, or wrangle a sibling to help and enjoy a screen-free activity. It’s fun and easy to make, both for kids and people that used to be kids.

When I moved my craft studio outside of my home 5 When I moved my craft studio outside of my home 5 years ago, I felt like a true badass business woman who had somehow created a career designing crafts for kids. I could pay rent, I had my own WiFi, I even had insurance—dayum! And over these years, 2 of them being covid, I have crafted countless posts and laughed at many craft-astrophies.

Last week I moved my studio back into my home (a new home) and after journeying through all the feelings of sadness, nostalgia, and even a twinge of failure, I have landed at a place of joy and relief to have every last material at my fingertips at all times.

Five years ago my kids were 5 and 7 and it was hard for them to understand that while it looks like Mommy is having a good time crafting, it was work and I needed to crank. Now, at 10 and 11, I can’t wait for them to come up to the Perch (that’s the working title of the home-based studio) and play with me. And for the weekends to include random gadget-making and bracelet beading. Bring. It. On.

Here are some of my fave pics of my @industrycity studio, where I always had ample room to store each bottle cap, Pom-Pom, and fabric scrap that crossed my path. @ikea supplied me with the most versatile furniture and fixtures to make that space functional and inspiring, and once I have the Perch all set, I’ll share with you how I’ve made it work in a new space.

Check out my stories for a series I call “The Leftunders”…once the studio was empty these were the droppings that were found under the furniture. It’s sort of like looking at your apartment after an amazing party…a glorious mess that proves a good time was had by all!

Part of my job is posting on social media. Clients Part of my job is posting on social media. Clients pay me to make cute things and share them with the likes of ✨YOU✨, and even when we are in the midst of a 🌎 crisis, whether it's political, social, environmental, medical, or really, all of the above, I still have to do my work (which, don't get me wrong, I do ❤️ and feel lucky to do). But sometimes it feels really frivolous to post a craft idea when my insides reflect the state of the world...like now: unsettled, hurting, and truly fearful.

And since the current holiday to craft for is Mother's Day, I feel like I am more than poised to express what ✨I WANT✨ this year. But sadly what I really want, my kids and husband cannot give me. I want Reproductive Rights, Voting Rights, F'in Gun Laws, Racial Justice, Equal Pay, Child care and Paid Family Leave, Respect for the Importance of Mental Healthcare, and a respect for our environment (plus so much more).

A few years ago I designed this #phrenology #mothersday printable for kids, partners, and loved ones to write what "makes up mom's mind." This year I printed it and filled it out myself. No, it didn't solve any problems, but it does remind me that I can share a merging of my work and my values. I just need to figure out how to do it more.

Here's something fun for me (and you)! We are one of Google's paid early testers for their Thank with Google pilot program! Thank with Google is a new feature that you'll see on my website—a little blue button will float as you scroll, and if you click on it, you can send me a little high-five of encouragement. It's kind of like the "heart" button here on Instagram, but with this, we are able to actually make moolah!

I can't speak for all content creators, but I share these ideas because (A) I love to craft and (B) I love to encourage folks to get creative with their kids. Sometimes I'm paid for the content that I make—maybe by a magazine or a brand that has sponsored the post, but so much that I share is just because I believe encouraging kids to take risks, experiment, and create is so vital to their futures as confident, self-confident humans.

By clicking the Thank with Google button, you can just send me a sticker as a sign of appreciation and some of the stickers translate into direct revenue that support our work and allow us to serve up more clever craft ideas!

If you try it out, let us know what you think! Thanks, as always, for your support. #ThankwithGoogle
