Jewish holidays are pretty remarkable in that they Jewish holidays are pretty remarkable in that they aren’t just celebrating a god, or the idea of a god, or the belief that we owe everything to that god. Sure, there is a higher power element to Judaism (after all, it is a religion), but each holiday has a more applicable lesson—one that can serve any single person whether you believe in god or Judaism or nothing of the sort. At the root, there is always a story, and there’s always a teachable, life lesson.

Purim begins tonight and honors a woman who took some major risks, told some lies, hid some truths, and in the end, saved her people. Basically, we are celebrating the enormous chutzpah of šŸ‘‘ Queen Esther (and her predecessor Vashti), and we get to roleplay this by dressing up in costume. While some might misconstrue the idea of costuming as hiding one’s identity, I look at it more like this: Sure I may look like a delicate butterfly, but also I can roar! What you see isn’t always what you get. šŸ¦‹šŸ¦

Today is #TuBishvat, the Jewish New Year for trees Today is #TuBishvat, the Jewish New Year for trees 🌳. At first, it might seem strange to celebrate nature in the quiet stillness of winter, when most trees appear bare and lifeless. But Tu Bishvat reminds us that growth isn’t always visible.
🌳
In a world that thrives on instant gratification—where success is often measured by immediate results—it’s important to remember that some of the most meaningful things in life take time. Beneath the surface, trees are hard at work, strengthening their roots and preparing to bloom. And when the time is right, they’ll give us fruit, shade, and beauty, but that only happens if we care for them now.
🌳
It’s also a great reminder for us humanfolk. One of my favorite quotes is ā€œBe patient with yourself; nothing in nature blooms all year.ā€

I always joke that nature is the ultimate free craft store—offering up sticks, pinecones, leaves, and rocks in endless supply. But nature will only keep giving if we keep protecting it. Saturday is Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Saturday is Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish religion—the Day of Atonement. Every year, I try to approach the holiday in a meaningful and tangible way with my kids who are now a whopping 12 and 14. We go to the park (whether permitting) and talk about our goals for ourselves, our family, and our community.

This year’s worksheet is about the idea of ā€œmissing the mark,ā€ which is how sin is translated into English from Hebrew. We typically think of sin as being this big, bad, ugly thing that warrants punishment, but if you consider that your action or words landed slightly off center, you can think about ways to course correct in the future. I always say that while these activities are intended to be used for #yomkippur, you can do it any day, Jewish or not!

You might be today year’s old when you learn tha You might be today year’s old when you learn that pomegranates are a ripe and plentiful symbol in the Jewish religion, especially around the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Among many reasons, it’s been said that pomegranates have 613 seeds, one for every mitzvah. (Mitzvah actually means commandment, but is often thought of as a good deed). Many Jewish families (especially the Sephardim, Jews descended from Spain and Portugal) serve the fruit on Rosh Hashanah in the hope that the coming year will bring many blessings, prosperity, and the opportunity to do good.

Today is the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Jews around the world are celebrating under a shadow of sadness—for the state of Israel, the remaining hostages, the ongoing death toll of the war, and the rampant antisemitism spreading worldwide.

It’s hard to find sweetness in such bitter times, but community and togetherness are the first step to healing. On Rosh Hashanah we say L’shana Tova U’metuka, which offers a wish of a good and sweet year. ā¤ļøšŸŽšŸŒ
