I think it was my 4th or 5th grade Hebrew school t I think it was my 4th or 5th grade Hebrew school teacher who altered my understanding of Hanukkah forever. We were always taught that the miracle of Hanukkah was that one day’s worth of olive oil lit the menorah of the destroyed temple for eight days. The Jews had been fighting persecution from the Syrians, defending their right to exist on their land, on their terms, believing in their God. (Oddly familiar sounding, right?)

But Mrs. Zelman taught us that the true miracle of Hanukkah was not the lasting drop of oil, but rather that “so few won over so many”— the outnumbered Jewish army persevered against overwhelming odds. While I recognize that the symbol of the oil is way more poetic alongside this festival of lights, this year, more than ever, I’m hanging onto this alternative miracle— with prayers that our refusal to be erased will stand.

I always like to make “flameless” menorahs so that the littlest among us have their own lights to shine! Instructions and material list over on projectkid.com.

I welcome any comments about your Hebrew school memories, Hanukkah crafts, or dreidels that you actually made out of clay!

It's almost Yom Kippur, so it's time for me to gat It's almost Yom Kippur, so it's time for me to gather my congregation of 3 (or 4 if we include Greta the dog) for our annual check-in. Having grown up in a conservative synagogue, I took this holiday very seriously—fasting, asking others for forgiveness, and thumping my fist over my heart (IYKYK). But the one person I never asked forgiveness from was myself, then and actually, even now. My therapist often reflects back how I *talk* to myself, asking me if my child came to me with the same troubles and feelings, would I speak to them the same way I *speak* to myself? Never. It's so enlightening every dang time, and I feel like I want to get my kids to start offering themselves some grace and kindness NOW!

Last year I shared a fun little fill-in-the-blank worksheet that I made for my family, but now, as my kids are entering their teen years and have a pretty good grasp on our family values and goals, I want to steer this year's message a bit more inward for them. I did some reading (mostly on my favorite Jewish feeds like @heyalma and @kveller) and listened to some episodes of @unorthodoxpodcast to put together this *equally* fun, and I hope meaningful, exercise.

If you would like to receive a link to both of the worksheets, just comment YKPK and I'll send a link to Projectkid.com to your DMs. I'll also link to some of the wonderful articles/podcasts that I read/heard in case you are interested!

Every year we look back at the Yom Kippurs past and the kids get so much entertainment seeing their handwriting and adorable spelling mistakes! (Slides 2+: At the bottom of each worksheet is a silly drawing prompt—these are the drawings from last year of our versions of a character named Hug McHuggster!)

I say this every year...this exercise is rather agnostic—there is a little mention of the holiday but it's useful for anyone of any belief set.
