Jewish holidays are pretty remarkable in that they Jewish holidays are pretty remarkable in that they aren’t just celebrating a god, or the idea of a god, or the belief that we owe everything to that god. Sure, there is a higher power element to Judaism (after all, it is a religion), but each holiday has a more applicable lesson—one that can serve any single person whether you believe in god or Judaism or nothing of the sort. At the root, there is always a story, and there’s always a teachable, life lesson.

Purim begins tonight and honors a woman who took some major risks, told some lies, hid some truths, and in the end, saved her people. Basically, we are celebrating the enormous chutzpah of 👑 Queen Esther (and her predecessor Vashti), and we get to roleplay this by dressing up in costume. While some might misconstrue the idea of costuming as hiding one’s identity, I look at it more like this: Sure I may look like a delicate butterfly, but also I can roar! What you see isn’t always what you get. 🦋🦁

Here’s a photo of me with my mom on Purim, c. 1980...and then a whole bunch of crown crafts I’ve made over the years in celebration of the queens!

To all who celebrate, go out and make some noise! #Purim #happypurim #jewishcrafts #purimcrafts

Today is #TuBishvat, the Jewish New Year for trees Today is #TuBishvat, the Jewish New Year for trees 🌳. At first, it might seem strange to celebrate nature in the quiet stillness of winter, when most trees appear bare and lifeless. But Tu Bishvat reminds us that growth isn’t always visible.
🌳
In a world that thrives on instant gratification—where success is often measured by immediate results—it’s important to remember that some of the most meaningful things in life take time. Beneath the surface, trees are hard at work, strengthening their roots and preparing to bloom. And when the time is right, they’ll give us fruit, shade, and beauty, but that only happens if we care for them now.
🌳
It’s also a great reminder for us humanfolk. One of my favorite quotes is “Be patient with yourself; nothing in nature blooms all year.”
🌳
I always joke that nature is the ultimate free craft store—offering up sticks, pinecones, leaves, and rocks in endless supply. But nature will only keep giving if we keep protecting it. Planting trees today ensures their gifts for generations to come. 🌱🌍 #PlantForTheFuture #tubshvat #treeoflife #tikkunolam

I think most people, including yours truly, associ I think most people, including yours truly, associate the dove and olive branch symbol with Christianity. While there are references in the New Testament, it first appears in the story of Noah and the flood. Noah sent a dove to determine if the flood waters were receding and the 🕊️ returned with 🫒 leaves, a souvenir from one of the heartiest trees. And while peace, a beautiful and much needed concept is the popular interpretation, you can also read this symbol as “rebuild, repair, and strengthen.” I think we can all agree that this planet can use a whole lot of hope and mending.

Peace, hope, repair….new or Old Testament—who really cares. Let’s just take care of each other 😊 … and make holiday decorations that radiate positivity and warmth!

(To make these, cut simple bird shapes from cardboard and paint them white. Use a needle to poke holes and stitch with yarn—this is a great early embroidery lesson for kids! You can make mini versions to use as ornaments and gift tags)

Think of all the ways we use the word “thread” Think of all the ways we use the word “thread” metaphorically in our every day. Text thread, follow the thread, common thread...and then beyond that are so many fabric analogies: fabric of our lives, cut from the same cloth, interwoven stories.
🧶
Thanksgiving is a great time to double-down on the whole “home is where the heart is” sentiment. It’s not the walls or the objects within them that matter...it’s the safety, vulnerability, and love you feel with the people that share them. Every family member is a strand woven into your family fabric...each relying on each other to function.
🧶
All of these projects mix yarn and natural objects like sticks, pumpkins and walnuts...perfect for a naturea and family-inspired Thanksgiving table. For instructions, so to my link in bio!

Saturday is Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Saturday is Yom Kippur, the most solemn day in the Jewish religion—the Day of Atonement. Every year, I try to approach the holiday in a meaningful and tangible way with my kids who are now a whopping 12 and 14. We go to the park (whether permitting) and talk about our goals for ourselves, our family, and our community.

This year’s worksheet is about the idea of “missing the mark,” which is how sin is translated into English from Hebrew. We typically think of sin as being this big, bad, ugly thing that warrants punishment, but if you consider that your action or words landed slightly off center, you can think about ways to course correct in the future. I always say that while these activities are intended to be used for #yomkippur, you can do it any day, Jewish or not!

You might be today year’s old when you learn tha You might be today year’s old when you learn that pomegranates are a ripe and plentiful symbol in the Jewish religion, especially around the holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Among many reasons, it’s been said that pomegranates have 613 seeds, one for every mitzvah. (Mitzvah actually means commandment, but is often thought of as a good deed). Many Jewish families (especially the Sephardim, Jews descended from Spain and Portugal) serve the fruit on Rosh Hashanah in the hope that the coming year will bring many blessings, prosperity, and the opportunity to do good.

Today is the first day of Rosh Hashanah and Jews around the world are celebrating under a shadow of sadness—for the state of Israel, the remaining hostages, the ongoing death toll of the war, and the rampant antisemitism spreading worldwide.

It’s hard to find sweetness in such bitter times, but community and togetherness are the first step to healing. On Rosh Hashanah we say L’shana Tova U’metuka, which offers a wish of a good and sweet year. ❤️🍎🌍

(Please leave space for sweet wishes here; this post was not intended to inflame any political opinions. L’shana Tova!)

I always tend to write “sending hugs” at the I always tend to write “sending hugs” at the bottom of my letters to Sommer at camp. So I decided to send her the closest thing to an actual hug as I could. I traced my hands on cardstock, cut them out, then glued a ribbon that measured from wrist to wrist at the bottom edge of each hand. I wrote her a note on the palms, and then gave myself a nice manicure and bling with gemstones!

Such a fun thing for a kid to open when they are away from home!

Michael the Father of My Children (that’s how he Michael the Father of My Children (that’s how he appears in my phone contacts) loves to fish, enjoys golf and tennis, occasionally wears a tie (and looks adorable), but I will never understand why #fathersdaygifts are so heavily weighted in these themes. He also loves candy🍬 ! And painting 🎨! And collecting records 🎧! And animals of all kinds🐶🦊🐧! And our new vegetable garden 🪴! Show me those cards, Hallmark!

One year, we chose three things that he loves and Oliver, Sommer and I made little paintings for him. I think to this day it’s his favorite gift from us of all time. It costs next to nothing and truly comes from the heart.

And guess where this treasured piece of art hangs in our new home? Yes, the bathroom, where he can see it for hours on end. (Sorry to end with a bathroom joke, babe!) 🧻
